Nidri & the Island of Lefkas

Nidri is often referred to as a fishing village in the travel brochures but that title is somewhat misleading. Nidri is still relatively small – you can walk the length of the village in about 20 minutes – but it is the main resort of the mountainous and stunningly beautiful island of Lefkada with plenty of shops, bars and traditional tavernas. Only a few years ago you would have to go into the main town of Lefkada for banking facilities but there are now two banks in Nidri and four cash points.

Nidri can be very busy during the months of July and August as it is very popular with the sailing community and the Italians alike! But in May, June and September, October, my favourite months, the village is much quieter and very relaxed. There are all kinds of boat trips and excursions at very reasonable prices and you can also hire a car (or mopeds but I don’t recommend those unless you are skilled!) and visit the glorious golden beaches and villages all around the island.

Unlike the islands in southern Greece, which can be quite barren, Lefkada is lush with greenery and vegetation. This is because it pours with rain in the winter! The weather at the beginning and end of the season can be variable but is usually excellent – warm, clear and sunny. Loose cotton clothing is recommended, along with a jacket or fleece for the evenings as you will still be eating outdoors. On that subject prices for meals again vary a great deal but you can still have an excellent meal for two with wine for less than £20.

Medical Insurance and Information

It is strongly recommended that you travel with an EHIC – the European Health Insurance Card – which has this year replaced the standard E111. This is a form that can be obtained free of charge from any post office in the UK and it entitles you to free medical care within Greece should that be necessary. You will need to supply your NHS or national insurance number, sign the form and have it stamped by the post office.

There are three chemists, English speaking doctors and a dentist available in Nidri and the main hospital of the island is in Lefkas town, just 20 minutes from Nidri. I speak (passable) Greek and am on hand 24 hours a day to deal with enquiries or emergencies of any kind.

As the weather can be hot from May through to October come with, or buy here, sun cream and mosquito repellent. The tap water is perfectly drinkable but if you want to err on the side of caution bottled water is available everywhere. Food related illnesses are extremely rare. You do not need any particular vaccinations to visit Greece.
